Statement
of the Council of Rectors of
universities IIIIV
accreditation levels Lviv region concearning recent developments in Kyiv, Ukraine

Brutal use of force against peaceful protesters at Euromaidan by Special Forces "Berkut" that happened on 18 February and on the night of February 19, 2014 in Kyiv, caused irreparable tragic consequences.

The escalation of violence, unfortunately, has become more and more threatening and culminated with opposition of people and the government that doesn’t defer peoples opinion.

As a result of the conflict bloodshed happened, with dozens of people killed and hundreds injured. The Lviv academic community expresses deep condolences to the families of those killed and injured during the events in Kyiv and other regions.

Today danger is at hand over Ukraine, real danger of deepening the bloody conflict, country splitup, loss of independence, territorial integrity and sovereignty.

We believe that the only way to avoid further bloodshed,to stop the offense, to restore a law and order, to solve the acute and protracted conflict in Ukraine is through the way of mutual compromise and constructive dialogue. A chance to stop the country's slide into chaos and violence still remains.

We turn to the leaders of the EU and world leaders to act as intermediaries in negotiations with opposing forces.

We strongly support the youth movement for European integration of Ukraine and consider inappropriate to call them "radicals" and "terrorists".

We encourage students and teachers to identify those dramatic days of peace and balance, to refrain from violent seizure of administrative buildings and other illegal acts.

Instead, they should guard schools to prevent theft and destruction of property, monuments of culture and history, national monuments.

We turn to our colleagues heads of higher education institutions throughout Ukraine, we will do everything possible no keep as the apple of our own eye, our national unity, an integral, unified, independent Ukrainian state!

We support the peaceful settlement of the conflict.
We call on politicians, community leaders and authorities and ask them for wisdom, balance and moderation. Everyone should be aware that the the fate of Ukraine and lives of its citizens are at stake.
